The 2001 Awards

The fourth British Independent Film Awards took place for the first time at The Park Lane Hotel, Piccadilly on Wednesday 24th October 2001. The elegant Art Deco Ballroom was filled with talent from all areas of the British film industry. The evening was hosted by Dermot O'Leary and first time filmmakers and actors celebrated with a wealth of established talent. Nominee directors included Michael Apted, Ken Loach and Michael Winterbottom with Jonathon Glazer winning Best Director for Sexy Beast. Ben Kingsley won Best Actor again for Sexy Beast and nominees in this category included Ray Winstone, Timothy Spall and Ian Hart who all attended. Kate Ashfield won Best Actress for her part in the debut directed film Late Night Shopping. Harvey Weinstein collected the filmfour special jury prize for the contribution made to British film my Harvey and his brother Bob. Tim Bevan of Working Title presented Richard Curtis with Variety's UK Personality of the Year Award, which was hosted for the first time by The British Independent Film Awards. Another first was the introduction of a new music award and this was won by Dave Pearce of Radio 1 for South West Nine.
